The VL38 Table Lamp, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in the late 1930s, features adjustable downward-directed light, a soft white-painted shade, and a choice of black or white powder-coated finishes with brass, now updated with energy-efficient LED technology and a timer function.
The VL38: Table Lamp was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in the late 1930s as part of his collaboration with Louis Poulsen for the Radiohuset building in Copenhagen, now known as the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Originally featured alongside the VL45 pendant, the VL38 began appearing in Louis Poulsen catalogues after World War II. The lamp has been updated over time, with the white & brass version relaunched in 2016 and the black edition introduced in 2017, both incorporating modern LED technology for improved energy efficiency. The lamp emits downward-directed light, and its shade is designed with an adjustable angle to optimise light distribution. The inside of the shade is painted white to provide a soft, comfortable glow. The lamp is available in two finishes: black powder-coated aluminium with brass or white powder-coated aluminium with brass.
The VL38 Table Lamp features a 3.3-meter cord and includes a switch on the lamp stand, offering two adjustable light levels. An external LED driver with plug is included, and the lamp has a timer function for automatic shut-off, settable to 4 or 8 hours. The untreated brass surfaces will naturally develop a patina over time, giving the lamp a unique, evolving character. The base and shade are crafted from aluminium, while the stem is made of brass. This table lamp combines functional lighting with a refined design, offering a classic look with modern advancements.
