The VL 56 pendant light was originally designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen for the Folkets Hus building in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, which opened in 1956. Created as part of a comprehensive architectural vision for the Danish Labour Movement, the building—now known as Vega—features Lauritzen’s designs throughout, including the furniture, lighting, and fittings. The VL 56 Pendant was one of several lighting pieces developed specifically for this space, and it still hangs today above the bar near the concert hall.
The pendant directs light downwards in a glare-free manner, with a radial perforation pattern around the opening that softens the transition between light and darkness. These perforations not only reduce sharp contrasts but also produce a gentle pattern of light on the shade itself and on nearby surfaces.
Available in polished brass or polished chrome-plated aluminium, with a white textile cord measuring four metres and a canopy included for installation. The brass finish is untreated and will naturally develop a patina over time, adding character as it ages. In 2023, both the brass and chrome versions were reintroduced with subtle updates to suit modern standards while respecting the original design.
