Description

The PH 5 pendant light was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 as a direct response to the unpredictable development of incandescent light bulbs at the time. Henningsen aimed to create a fixture that would provide consistent, comfortable lighting regardless of the light source. Built around his reflective three-shade system, the lamp directs most of the light downwards, while also emitting lateral light that softly illuminates the frame itself.

The shades are finished in matte white on the inside to help diffuse the light, and a frosted glass diffuser on the lower shade ensures a glare-free downward glow. An anti-glare shade and rolled aluminium struts complete the structure, staying true to Henningsen’s scientific approach to light control. Originally designed with coloured elements to adjust the tone of light from early bulbs, the PH 5 has since adapted to modern lighting technologies.

Still grounded in its original purpose, the design continues to reflect Henningsen’s focus on comfort and functionality. Available in a range of finishes and also offered in a smaller size as the PH 5 Mini, the pendant remains a recognisable piece of Danish lighting design.
