Description
The PH 5 Mini pendant light, designed by Poul Henningsen, is a scaled-down version of his original PH 5 design from 1958. It follows the same three-shade system that Henningsen developed in the 1920s to provide soft, glare-free lighting. The design directs most of the light downwards while also allowing light to spread sideways, gently illuminating the pendant itself. This approach results in a balanced, comfortable glow that avoids harsh shadows and bright spots.
Henningsen created the PH 5 in response to the ever-changing shapes and sizes of light bulbs, aiming to produce consistent and reliable lighting regardless of the source used. The PH 5 Mini, introduced in 2017, keeps to these same principles but with a more compact form, featuring a top shade around 30 centimetres in diameter. The inside of the shades is matt white, helping to diffuse the light, while an anti-glare shade and aluminium struts complete the structure. A range of finishes is available, offering different colour options to suit various settings.
A more recent update to the design came in 2020 with the introduction of the PH 5 Mini Monochrome series, which includes options in matte-painted black, white, or ultra blue for a simpler, more modern finish. While the colours may change, the core design remains true to Henningsen’s original aim of shaping light in a functional and thoughtful way.
