Description
The PH 3½-3 pendant light, designed by Poul Henningsen, is part of a long-standing exploration into glare-free lighting, built around his signature three-shade system developed in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in the 1920s.
This pendant uses carefully proportioned shades to reflect most of the light downwards, ensuring a comfortable and well-directed illumination. The shades are crafted from mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass, with a glossy exterior and a sandblasted inner surface. This combination helps to diffuse the light softly and evenly, reducing harsh contrasts and creating a calm, balanced atmosphere. The frame is finished in brass metallised, offering a subtle contrast to the white opal glass.
Henningsen’s design approach was rooted in both mathematics and practicality. His use of a logarithmic spiral to guide the shape and placement of the shades allowed for even light distribution and minimal glare. The PH 3½-3 is one of many outcomes of this methodical process, and reflects Henningsen’s lifelong focus on creating lighting that works in harmony with its surroundings.
