Description
The PH 3½-2½ floor lamp, designed by Poul Henningsen, is based on the three-shade system he developed to direct and diffuse light effectively. This system allows most of the light to be cast downwards, creating a practical and comfortable glow without glare.
The lamp has shades made from mouth-blown, three-layered opal glass. The outer surface is glossy, while the underside is sandblasted to soften the light and provide even illumination. This combination helps reduce harsh shadows and produces a calm, balanced light. The frame is finished in brass metallised, which complements the white opal glass and brings a subtle warmth to the overall look.
Henningsen developed his three-shade system in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 1925–1926 for an exhibition in Paris. The partnership continued until his death in 1967. His goal was to design lighting that avoided glare and produced gentle, well-directed light using incandescent bulbs. Over time, this approach expanded into a full system of designs, resulting in around a thousand variations, including table, floor, wall, and ceiling lights.
The system allowed for a range of colours, materials, and sizes. Early models used metal shades with painted interiors to create different lighting effects, while later versions incorporated glass to offer a softer, more ambient feel. Henningsen’s use of a logarithmic spiral helped ensure consistent light distribution, with the size and placement of each shade calculated to reduce light evenly as it moves away from the source.
Reintroduced in its current form in 2002, the PH 3½-2½ floor lamp is part of this broader family of designs, which includes 30 variations—three of which are made for outdoor use.
