The Enigma: 545 Pendant Light, designed by Shoichi Uchiyama and first launched in 2003, reimagines the traditional chandelier through a series of lightweight, concentric shades suspended by fine wires. Its construction creates a sense of visual lightness, as each tier appears to float independently, giving the fixture a distinct presence without dominating its surroundings. The lamp emits soft, downward light that is both glare-free and evenly distributed across surfaces. This is achieved through a shade design that features a matte upper surface to diffuse the light and a shiny lower surface to reflect it efficiently.
The Enigma 425 was the first model in the series, followed by the larger Enigma 825 in 2005 and the mid-sized Enigma 545 in 2007. All versions follow the same design principle, combining precision and visual simplicity to produce a calm and comfortable light. In 2018, a black version was introduced alongside the original aluminium finish, broadening the options for different interior settings. The Enigma: 545 Pendant Light reflects Louis Poulsen’s focus on functional lighting and embodies a blend of Japanese craftsmanship and Scandinavian design restraint.
