Description
The AJ floor lamp, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957, was originally created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen as part of a wider design scheme that extended from architecture through to furniture and lighting. The lamp reflects Jacobsen’s interest in clarity of form and the relationship between function and geometry, with its clean lines and interplay of angles echoing the architectural language found in his buildings.
The lamp emits a downward-directed light, suitable for focused illumination. Its shade can be tilted approximately 90 degrees, allowing the light to be directed as needed. The interior of the shade is painted white, which helps to diffuse the light softly and reduce glare. The design balances a slender profile with visual precision, making it a considered example of Jacobsen’s approach to modernist design.
