Vispring
Vispring’s origin story traces back to 1899 when James Marshall, a British engineer, handcrafted a supportive mattress for his ill wife while they were in Canada. The revolutionary design featured coiled springs wrapped in muslin, which provided unparalleled comfort. However, it wasn’t until 1901 that this innovative concept made its way to Britain. John Nolon and Frederick James were responsible for bringing the design to Britain and decided to commercialize it. Consequently, the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company was incorporated in 1901.
In 1911, ocean liners were considered the epitome of luxury travel, and it was at this time that Vispring, under its current name, secured its first major orders. The bespoke comfort of a Vispring mattress perfectly complemented the opulent cabins and suites of the world’s most prestigious ships, including the Titanic and Olympic. Over the years, Vispring’s expert bed makers continued to experiment with new mattress fillings, introducing more natural materials such as horsehair, pure cotton, and Shetland wool, as well as luxury finishes such as silk and cashmere. In 1932, Vispring introduced the world’s first pocket-sprung divan, which remains the ultimate sleeping experience to this day.
After decades of innovation and the creation of countless bespoke mattresses, Vispring was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2012. This prestigious award recognizes businesses that have demonstrated excellence in the areas of international trade, innovation, and sustainable development. Today, Vispring beds are available in 50 countries and sold by over 500 retailers, making the perfect night’s sleep accessible to more people than ever before.
