Flos

Flos, meaning “flower” in Latin, grew from a simple idea: to design objects that would enhance daily life. Beginning with a light bulb, the company aimed to make an impact not just in Italy, but in international markets as well.

In the early 1960s, Dino Gavina saw an opportunity to expand beyond furniture design. His small Eisenkeil manufacturing facility in Merano had been working with designers such as Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa. Gavina thought the time was right to venture into lighting.

Using technology originally developed in the USA and tested at Eisenkeil—the same used for the Cocoon lamp—the Castiglioni brothers and Scarpa pair began creating lamps. Their designs, including the Taraxacum and Fantasma, were among the first of many innovative lighting solutions.

From the start, Flos was rethinking artificial lighting. This approach is reflected in the words of Piero Gandini:

“We need to blend emotions, technology, poetry, needs, messages, and aesthetic and political values. We’re not just altering techniques, but influencing society and our behaviours. We should strive to improve people’s lives… with the same warmth as the light from a campfire under the stars.”
